Chimney Repairs
Historic chimney structures require specialist knowledge, traditional materials and sympathetic repair methods.
The most exposed masonry on any period building.
A chimney stack is weathered on every face, thermally cycled by the flue below and frequently the last part of a building to be inspected. Cement flaunching, hard pointing and mastic-sealed flashings shorten its life rather than extend it. We rebuild and repoint in lime, retain original brick and stone wherever we can, and detail leadwork traditionally so that junctions shed water on their own.
Chimney work is nearly always carried out together with the roof around it, since the two share the same access and the same failure points.
01
Traditional Slate Roofing
Natural slate roofs protect everything beneath them. We repair and re-slate using salvaged and newly matched slate, keeping original coursing, fixings and detailing.
- Traditional slate roof repairs
- Natural slate replacement and matching
- Ridge tile and parapet repairs
02
Chimney Repairs & Stabilisation
Exposed on all sides, historic chimney stacks weather faster than any other part of a building. Repairs are carried out in traditional materials, retaining original brick and stone wherever possible.
- Chimney repairs and rebuilding
- Lime mortar chimney repointing
- Structural stabilisation of chimney stacks
03
Leadwork & Flashings
Most water entering a period roof arrives through failed junction detailing rather than through the covering itself. Leadwork is formed traditionally, not sealed with mastic.
- Lead flashing repairs and replacement
- Soakers, valleys and parapet gutter linings
- Roof leak investigation and maintenance
04
Preventative Roof Maintenance
Small, regular works prevent large, disruptive ones. We provide cyclical maintenance for period properties, managing agents and institutional estates.
- Rainwater goods and gutter repairs
- Preventative roof maintenance for period properties
- Cyclical inspection and condition reporting
