The Project
Summit Conservation was involved in restoration works to the Chapter House and the main nave building at Christ Church Cathedral.
The works comprised comprehensive repointing and targeted repairs around the stone-mullioned windows and window tracery.
Christ Church Cathedral
Specialist Stone Conservation
The intricate Caen stone window tracery required the most careful attention. Caen stone is fine-grained and soft, and the carved sections carry a great deal of the cathedral's character.
Repairs were undertaken in situ rather than unnecessarily replacing historic sections, allowing significantly more original fabric to be retained in the building.
Working with the Design Team
The works were carried out in collaboration with stained-glass artist Evan Conlon and the wider design team, coordinating stone conservation around the glazing programme.
The works were completed on time and within budget, and to the satisfaction of the architect and design team.
The Result
Repointed elevations, conserved tracery and the retention of original carved stone that a replacement-led approach would have lost.
