The Project
The works comprised the stabilisation, repair and conservation of the historic dock walls at George's Dock.
Dock structures are built from large limestone blocks and have spent their working lives in constant contact with water. The conservation programme addressed the walls as a structure as well as a surface.
Conservation Approach
Masonry was stabilised, repointed and repaired, with stone replacement where individual elements were beyond repair.
- Stabilisation of historic dock walls
- Repointing of masonry joints
- Stone repair and, where required, stone replacement
- Conservation of historic mooring rings and other iron elements

George's Dock
Specialist Stone Handling
Some individual stone elements weighed more than one tonne. Each required careful removal, manoeuvring, repair or reinstatement, and re-bedding into the wall.
Work of that scale demands planning, lifting discipline and masons who understand how a historic wall carries its loads — the stone has to come out and go back without disturbing what surrounds it.

Historic Ironwork
Conservation work was also carried out to the historic mooring rings and other iron elements set into the dock walls, retaining the fittings that record the structure's working history.
The Result
Stabilised, repaired and repointed dock walls with their historic stone and ironwork retained in place.
