Traditional Repointing
Removal of damaging cement pointing and reinstatement in matched lime mortars and historic joint profiles.
Cement repointing is the most common cause of accelerated stone decay in Ireland. We carefully rake out failed cement without widening the joint, then repoint in a lime mortar matched by analysis to the original — restoring both the appearance and the moisture behaviour of the wall.
What this includes
- Careful hand raking out of cement pointing
- Mortar analysis and bespoke matching
- Hot-mixed lime and NHL mortars as appropriate
- Weather-struck, flush, recessed and tuck pointing
- Wigging and ribbon pointing reinstatement
- Deep joint packing to rubble walls
Our process
- 01
Sampling
Original mortar analysed for binder and aggregate.
- 02
Raking out
Hand tools and fine quirks only — no disc cutters on arrises.
- 03
Preparation
Joints flushed and dampened to control suction.
- 04
Pointing
Mortar packed in layers to full depth.
- 05
Finishing
Beaten back and brushed to expose aggregate.
- 06
Protection
Hessian and damp curing to avoid shrinkage cracking.
Benefits
- Walls able to release moisture through the joint, not the stone
- Historic joint width and profile reinstated
- Dramatic improvement in elevation appearance
- Halts the cycle of stone face loss
